Know your fin

the parts, plainly

A fin is just a wing. Five features decide how it behaves — the rest is marketing. Here's the map.

tip leading edge trailing edge base foil depth sweep
  • BaseHow long the fin is where it meets the board. More base = more drive down the line.
  • DepthHow far it reaches into the water. More depth = more hold and grip through a turn.
  • Sweep (a.k.a. rake)How far the tip leans back. Upright = tight, snappy turns. Raked = long, drawn-out arcs.
  • AreaThe total surface. More area holds; less area lets go. It's the master dial.
  • FoilThe fin's cross-section, like a wing. It shapes the water flowing past and tunes lift and release.

Fin 101

Everything above collapses into three trade-offs. There's no "best" fin — only the fin that matches how you want the wave to feel.

Sweep sets the turn

Upright · pivotyRaked · flowy

An upright fin turns tight and reacts fast. A raked fin draws longer, smoother lines and holds power through the arc.

Area sets the hold

Less · loose & fastMore · locked-in

More fin in the water means more grip and drive. Less fin means a looser, skatier, faster-feeling ride that breaks free easily.

Flex sets the feel

Stiff · responsiveFlexy · springy

A stiff fin answers instantly and drives hard. A flexier fin loads up and springs back, adding projection out of turns.

What they're made of

no mystery plastic

SSF keeps the material list short and the quality high. Two constructions, both fiberglass, both meant to last more than a season.

CMYK printed fiberglass

Solid fiberglass with the artwork printed in full CMYK, so the graphic is in the fin — not a sticker that peels. Consistent flex, predictable return to center.

Handcrafted glass (Globe)

Layered and foiled by hand for extra hold and a slightly stiffer, driveier feel. The set for bigger surfers and bigger waves.

Continuous foil

No flat spots. A clean, continuous cross-section means water flows without drag or chatter, and the fin does what you ask of it.
